Lifestyle Tips for Dealing with a Midlife Crisis Positively

Lifestyle Tips for Dealing with a Midlife Crisis PositivelyThe term “midlife crisis” is one that virtually everyone has heard of, regardless of age. While this phase in a person’s life is typically viewed as being negative, there is no rulebook that says dealing with a midlife crisis has to be so bad. Man or woman, tackling this obstacle in life can be overcome with great results, as long as staying positive is a part of the process. Of course while this is usually easier said than done, knowing the information below will help boost the odds in your favor and allow you to move on with your life in a healthier way.

First thing’s first: experiencing a midlife crisis is going to be negative in the beginning - that’s just a fact of life that isn’t likely to change. In fact, there are actually symptoms that are commonly shared by those undergoing a midlife crisis. The most notable include, but are not limited to: regrets, resentment, fatigue, depression, irritability, mood swings, anxiety, intense longing for something and a pessimistic outlook on the years to come. Experiencing any or all of these symptoms is normal and not to be ignored. The key to making the transition from negative to positive is allowing these symptoms to present themselves, identify them as signs of a midlife crisis and then addressing the solution(s) in a positive way.

One way to combat a midlife crisis is by focusing not on the things in your life you never did or are not able to do, but the very things you have done and know you are going to do in the future. Although having such an attitude may be difficult in the beginning, training your mind to look at the good instead of the bad will eventually transform the way you approach your own midlife crisis. For example, don’t think about that amazing job opportunity you missed out on when you were younger - pat yourself on the back for being great at the job you’re doing now. Take time to look through the various awards, accomplishments and other accolades you’ve collected throughout your career. Don’t have any? Then create a plan of action to follow that will get you those awards and the sense of fulfillment that comes with knowing you are the best at what you do.

Instead of living in the past, plan for the future. Anyone can turn a negative midlife crisis into something good by making a new to-do list of activities that you want to participate in, places you want to travel to and goals you want to reach. Display your list in your work area, make copies and carry your list with you wherever you go. This will serve as a constant reminder to stick to your guns and plan of action. Staying busy and making plans for what you’ll achieve next in your life is a positive way to move forward instead of being preoccupied with what happened (or didn’t happen) in the past.

Have a family? Then use your midlife crisis to lay down a foundation for what you want to leave behind for your children. Become more involved in your kids’ lives and introduce them to the activities, sports or other experiences that you didn’t get the chance to experience for yourself. This is a great way to highlight their lives and relive your childhood without becoming completely obsessed with it.

Any midlife crisis can be overcome when a strong support system is in place. Surround yourself with positive people that are actively reaching their goals and jump on their bandwagon.
