Travel Know-How for Parents with Children

Travel Know-How for Parents with ChildrenIt goes without saying that the way parents do everyday tasks becomes drastically different after they have had children. Not only does this include grocery shopping, running errands and even going to the movies, it also includes traveling. Whether your family is planning on visiting relatives for a few days or is getting ready to take some much-needed time off for a vacation, it is important to make sure that you plan accordingly and in advance so that you’ll be able to accommodate your children and ensure that the trip will be as stress-free as possible for everyone.

Nothing makes a family trip worse than being unprepared or unorganized. If this is your habit as a parent, do yourself a favor and learn how to correct this. The accommodations you and your partner will need to make when traveling with your children will vary in some ways by the method of travel you choose.

Airplane

For parents of children that are under two years of age, it is best to make things as comfortable as possible for your baby. If you find that your baby behaves well while riding in his/her car seat while driving, bring the car seat onto the plane with you, which will provide the baby with something familiar. However, it is best to first find out what the airline’s policy is when it comes to traveling with a car seat. You may be required to purchase a ticket for your baby if you are able to bring the car seat on board. Choose a flight that won’t be packed, that way you’ll have plenty of room to help set up your baby. Don’t forget to bring along a favorite toy or blanket to help ease any anxiety that might be caused by the airplane or the flight itself.

Children over the age of two should have plenty of activities to keep them busy. This should be more than electronic gaming devices. Throw in some coloring books, word searches, puzzles, books and other items that will keep them occupied while strengthening their learning skills.

Train

Like the airplane, traveling by train with young children should be planned in advance. For babies, you’ll need to bring along a car seat but keep in mind that most train seats do not come with seatbelts. Because of this, it is helpful to have your baby’s car seat facing you at all times. Bring plenty of food, snacks and drinks for your children in order to avoid going back and forth from the dining car to your seats. The less roaming around you have to do, the better. Dress your children in layers so they won’t have to suffer through temperature changes that often occur when traveling by train.

International Travel

Traveling with your children internationally is a great way to introduce them to other cultures, people and ways of life. Depending on the age range of your children, bring them to the doctor to make sure they receive the most recent vaccinations. Be sure to explain to your children the way time difference works and what they can expect. It is recommended to change your children’s sleep schedules a few days before your trip to help with the transition into a new time zone. When you arrive, make sure to involve your kids in activities that will keep them active during the day so that they’ll adjust easier to staying awake during the day and going to bed in a new time zone.
