According to statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) there has been an almost 500 percent increase in breast augmentation surgery for girls 18 or younger over the last 10 years. The ASAPS indicates that there were one million breast augmentation procedures done on teens 18 and younger in 1997 and almost 4 million in 2007.
The incidence of breast augmentation procedures among teenagers has attracted much attention recently following the death of 18-year old Stephanie Kuleba. The young woman died during breast augmentation surgery from an apparent reaction to anesthesia. Kuleba’s parents said she was having the surgery to correct an inverted nipple and to make her breasts symmetrical.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not recommend breast augmentation for persons younger than 18.
