Australian Women to Test Metal Breast Implants

Updated Apr 24, 2007

Three thousand Australian women are being recruited by cosmetic surgeons to test a new type of titanium breast implant. The European-made metal implant is being tested to help alleviate the situation where after breast enhancement surgery, the breast becomes hard over time.

In excess of 10, 000 breast enhancement surgeries are performed in Australia on an annual basis with a reported seven percent resulting breast hardening. The condition occurs when breast tissue squeezes the implant leading to the breast becoming unnaturally firm and can lead to misshapen breasts and even pain.

The metallic implants are really silicone gel implants that are lightly coated with a thin layer of titanium.
