Following on the rise of nanotechnology in the manufacture of cosmetics and toiletries,
Australia’s New South Wales Greens is calling for a ban on such products. Member of Parliament Lee Rhiannon wants the ban to go into effect until regulations governing nanotech is in place. The Greens believe that nanoparticles may well become the asbestos of the 21st century’.
Nanotechnology allows for the creation of ingredients that are very minute and thus better able to work beneath the skin’s surface. According to the Greens, this can lead to “cell death and DNA mutation”. The technology is currently being used in shampoos, sunscreens and anti-aging facial products.
