The continuing debate into whether or not nanoparticles used in cosmetics and personal care products pose any health risks has resulted in the establishment of the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI).
The focus of the US-based agency will be on researching the possible effects of “nanomaterials on human health and the environment.”
The NNI will be working with different government bodies and agencies to study nanotechnology’s use in the beauty industry paying particular attention to concerns over its safety.
Nanotechnology has taken the personal care, cosmetic and food industries by storm over the last couple of years. However, much concern still exists as to how safe it really is and there are demands from various sectors of society including consumers for additional research.
Approximately $254 million is earmarked by the NNI to meet the request of the US government for additional research into nanotech in 2009.
