In a bid to protect patients, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario has ruled that no one without surgical training can refer to themselves as surgeons in their title. In addition, they must be able to back up claims of medical specialization with proper accreditation. This will not mean that doctors who perform cosmetic procedures such as breast enhancement and liposuction can no longer do so, but they cannot call themselves ‘surgeons’.
It is hoped that these new measures will help patients be better informed when selecting a doctor to perform cosmetic procedures.
The new ruling is yet to receive the approval of the Ontario government.
