Many factors have been attributed with helping to boost the demand for cosmetic surgery. The latest published reports online have added popular networking website Facebook to that list. Plastic surgeons have reported that demand is rising, and they have linked this trend to social media.
This seems to be bolstered by information provided by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). No studies have been done to confirm the theory, but it is felt that social media exposes people to greater scrutiny. This may have the effect of making flaws more noticeable and lowering self confidence. Plastic surgeon Dr. Adam Schaffner explained it by saying, “…when you see yourself on social media, you’re seeing yourself the way the world sees you.”
