With an increase in the number of people growing concerned about cosmetics safety, it is not surprising that some skincare companies have been jumping on the natural cosmetic bandwagon. The question is whether they are being honest with the buying public about the organic nature of their cosmetics. According to one environmental group, many of them are not.
Recent online reports state that as many as 26 companies have been named in a report drafted by the Center for Environmental Health. The group has filed a lawsuit against companies it feels have failed to meet standards set out by authorities in California as it relates to organic cosmetics. Companies are required to have products that contain a minimum of 70 percent organic ingredients before their products can be labeled as such.
These rules are not widely used outside of California, but they have been ratified by the US Department of Agriculture. Hain Celestial Group Inc. and Alliance Boots were among the companies named in the suit.
