Delayed Effect of Skin Fillers Reported

Updated May 22, 2008

Scientists have found that dermal fillers can have serious side effects, which are only seen a few months after the injections have been administered. The findings, which were published in May’s issue of Archives of Dermatology, found that months after the injectable fillers were used, patients developed various ailments including arthritis, fever and skin lesions.

Patients who had polyalkylimide implant injections reacted badly to the procedures with some having recurrent problems even a year after the implants were administered.

The study’s authors said that “Considering the increased use of polyalkylimide implants in European countries and in the United States, physicians should be aware that intermediate or delayed adverse effects can occur with polyalkylimide implants just as they can with collagen, polyacrylamide, polylactic acid or methacrylate (cosmetic fillers).”

Dr. Jaume Alijotas-Reig, one of the authors said that based on the result of the study, “the complete safety of the implants can no longer be assured.”
