FDA May Place Ban on OTC Bleaching Creams

Updated May 24, 2007

A popular over-the-counter skin care product, bleaching cream, may become a thing of the past if the FDA (Federal Drug Administration) goes ahead and ban the product. The FDA is concerned that one of the main ingredients in bleaching creams, hydroquinone has been found to cause cancer in animal.

The American Academy of Dermatology has suggested that before a ban be placed on OTC bleaching cream, the FDA should commission a ‘large human study’ to ascertain if hydroquinone poses any heath risks to human.

Hydroquinone is used in skin whiteners to lighten the color of skin, however, due to apparent cancer risk its use is banned in some European countries.
