Fake cosmetics are a growing concern among cosmetic manufacturers who report that in the
Middle East the market is upwards of $210 million. Over a four year period, 2000 – 2004, approximately $50 million worth of counterfeit cosmetics was seized in the region. These fake cosmetics include many top brands such as L’Oreal, Johnson and Johnson and Christian Dior.
It is estimated by the World Customs Organization that the bulk of the profits (up to 80%) from the fake cosmetic trade is used to fund illegal activities. A number of players in the cosmetic industry have started an anti-counterfeiting program to fight the problem
