Is Smoking Making You Bald?

Updated Nov 30, 2007

A study conducted at the Far Eastern Memorial Hospital in Tapei, Taiwan indicates that cigarettes may contribute to male pattern baldness (andregenetic alopecia). The study of 740 Taiwanese men found that those who smoked more than twenty (20) cigarettes per day were more likely to lose their hair. Researchers believe that smoking may result in baldness because it destroys hair follicles as well as damages the cells at the root of the follicles. The research also confirmed that Asian men are less likely to go bald and that hair loss when it occurs, does so at a later age on average.

Currently, the best treatment for hair loss is Rogaine and Propecia and other similar pharmaceutical products. It is estimated that the hair loss market is now worth US$1.4 billion (€1 billion).
