The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC) has gotten some power brokers in their corner. The group now has Senators John Kerry, Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein joining the call for testing of lipstick for lead. This follows a report from the CSC in January that 60 percent of 33 different brands of lipstick tested were found to have lead levels of between 0.02 to 0.65 parts per million.
Former presidential hopeful, Kerry said, “Dangerous levels of lead in lipstick is the latest reminder that insufficient safeguards at the FDA pose real risks to everyday Americans.” The senators are asking that the level of lead in lipstick be lowered. They also issued a call to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to test lipsticks and announce the results to the public.
