Koreans Look West for Cosmetic Surgery Inspiration

Updated Jan 18, 2012

Yet another country has shown a strong Western influence in its cosmetic surgery demands. According to online reports, South Koreans are visiting plastic surgeons to make their faces smaller. Double-jaw surgery is now one of the hottest trends in that country.

Originally conceived as an orthodontic procedure, double-jaw surgery is now being requested by people who want to appear more Caucasian. Some people even go one step further and request chin reduction as well. A South Korean doctor feels that the trend is driven by local celebrities who have had the surgery. He was quoted as saying, “Many still view Western looks as uniform standards of beauty.”

Patients require months of recovery after the surgery. It costs over 10 million won ($8, 690 U.S.), Reports claim that foreigners are also visiting the country to have these procedures done. There have been deaths reported in a few cases of double jaw surgery patients.
