Lancôme Takes Uma to Court

Updated May 12, 2008

In 2000, actress Uma Thurman and Lancôme signed a deal which gave the French cosmetic company the right to use the actress’s name and face in its advertising campaign. The contract was for two years with an option to renew for an additional two years. Apparently, the option was not taken up, yet Thurman’s image is still being used to advertise Lancôme’s products on billboards in Canada and Asian Web sites.

Thurman has demanded a payment of $1 million from Lancôme who has taken the actress to court. According to Lancôme, they are not responsible if third parties use Thurman’s name and face after her contract was ended.

Online news reports quote Thurman lawyer as stating, “I’m delighted that the case will go before a jury. They got an enormous benefit throughout the world after the contract was over, and $1 million doesn’t begin to do it.”
