Although there is still some debate, scientists at the French-based International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) an arm of the World Health Organization
have stated that there may be an increased cancer risk to male hairdressers who come in contact with hair color. It is believed that exposure to hair dye raises the risk of bladder cancer. A report published in The Lancet Oncology journal notes that exposure to hair coloring products may possibly be “carcinogenic to humans”.
Colipa (The European Cosmetic Toiletry and Perfumery Association) has responded however that “The review is mainly based on occupational exposures that occurred decades ago when working conditions may have been different from today.”
