Nanotechnology a Bigger Worry to Scientists than To Consumers

Updated Dec 2, 2007

When it comes to nanotechnology a study published in the recent issue of Nature Nanotechnology indicates that scientists are more worried about the new technology than the public. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that only 20 percent of the public were concerned that nanotechnology may cause health-related problems, while more than 30 percent of the 363 scientists interviewed were concerned. Of those polled, it was found that while 20 percent of the scientists feared a new form of nanotechnology pollution only 15 percent of the general public did.

Dietram Scheufele, professor of Life Sciences Communication and Journalism at the University was reported in Cosmeticsdesign-europe.com explaining the scientists concerns: “Scientists aren’t saying there are problems. They are saying, ‘we don’t know. The research hasn’t been done.’”
