Blackberry leaf extract has long been used in herbal medicine, but new research is indicating that it can also be a potent ingredient in anti-aging products. The research team led by Martina Hermann found that blackberry leaf extract worked as an inhibitor against the enzymes, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) that help to break down collagen. MMPs break down collagen and elastin and cause wrinkles and other signs of aging as a result skin losing its firmness. The extract is said to also have antioxidant properties that are similar to tea.
The research was published in the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetics Chemists (IFSCC), edition 1, 2007.
