New Methods Needed to Test safety of Nanomaterials

Updated Jul 2, 2007

The hottest new trend in the cosmetic industry, nanotechnology, is still cause for concern according to scientists worldwide. However, scientists in Europe are leading the charge to have these materials properly assesed to determine any potential health risks. The Scientific Committee on Consumer Products (SCCP) believes that traditional methods of risk assessment may not be best suited for nanomaterials. Current methods include exposure assessment and hazard identification. The Committee’s opinion, The Safety of Nanomaterials in Cosmetics Products, was released last week and highlighted the SCCP’s main concerns. The SCCP noted that there was insufficient information on:

·    hazard identification

·    possible health effects, and

·    the transfer of nanoparticles through the placenta to the fetus

The SSCP and the European Commission (EU) have opened up a consultative process to the public.
