A new study exploring the issue of cosmetics safety could generate more interest in natural cosmetics. According to reports online, there is a possible connection between phthalates and the behavior of infants. The problem is further compounded by the fact that phthalates can be found in many personal care products.
The study was led by Dr Stephanie Engel of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Urine samples were taken from 177 pregnant women. During follow ups, they were given questionnaires on their children’s behavior.
Issues such as attention difficulties and aggression were noted in the study. Reports indicate that these were linked to the presence of low molecular weight phthalates during pregnancy. The researchers pointed out, however, that these findings do not meet the standard of being ‘clinically significant’, and that further study is needed.
