Permanent Makeup Proving to be Dangerous

Updated Jul 7, 2007

An increasing number of complaints from patients have led US scientists to investigate what could be responsible. There has been a drastic increase in the number of complaints. Between 1998 and 2003, the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) received only five complaints, but since 2003 to present, there have been 150 reports of adverse reaction to permanent makeup. The Atlanta-based Centre for Disease Control and Prevention interviewed 92 women out of 101 persons who reported suffering some negative side effects after getting permanent cosmetics.

The most common complaints were itching, swelling, tenderness and skin outbreaks. Some of the negative reactions were also said to be long-lasting with reports of between three months to three years not being uncommon.

The FDA does not currently approve the inks used in permanent makeup, but is looking into changing this as more people turn to permanent makeup.
