The belief that frequent use of talc powder on the genital area can increase the risk of ovarian cancer has long been discussed.
As such, a number of medical doctors, public health experts and consumer groups are lobbying to have an appropriate warning placed on talc powder containers. This is not the first time that concerned groups have petitioned the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) to have warning labels concerning carcinogenic properties of talc powder placed on the product.
The 2008 petition like the one in 1994 is supported by a number of scientific publications. The current petition is being supported by President of the Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association, Edward Kavanaugh.
According to the petition, “an analysis of 16 pooled studies confirmed a statistically significant 33% increased risk of ovarian cancer associated with the perineal use of talc…”
