When Dr. Michael Salzhauer wrote My Beautiful Mommy he wanted to help children understand why their mothers were having plastic surgery. The book aimed at 4 to 7-year olds has hit the wrong nerve with many persons. Fellow plastic surgeon, Dr. Stephen Greenberg said that this kind of information may affect how elementary school aged children view themselves. He believes that children at this age shouldn’t even be ‘exposed to plastic surgery’.
Dr. Salzhauer defends his book by stating that he wrote it to make it easier for parents to explain to their children why they needed the procedures. In an interview with Reuters, he said, “This is for a specific consumer at a specific time in their life that is going to turn their household upside down for a couple of weeks.”
Jessica Valenti, editor of feministing.com in reacting to the book, asked, “Do we really have to teach our kids that we need it ‘to feel better’ and be ‘beautiful?’”. The book has been receiving criticism from other quarters as well.
