Updated Mar 21, 2008

A surprising number of children were poisoned in 2007 by cosmetics. According to the report from the New York City Health Department, 90 percent of poisoning incidents happened at home resulting from cosmetics, hand soaps and shampoos. Thirty-five percent of the 70, 000 calls received by the Poison Control Center in 2007 concerned poisoning of children less than five years old.

In fact the report indicated that 2,228 calls were received that involved children poisoned by cosmetics and personal care products. Other common things that result in the poisoning of young children were listed as petroleum jelly and diaper rash creams.
