Research Could Spark New Paraben Fears

Updated Jan 19, 2012

Numerous studies have suggested that the presence of parabens in personal care products poses a risk to users. Of great concern to researchers was the possible link between these compounds and breast cancer. Recent studies done on breast tissue from mastectomy recipients determined that small amounts of parabens were present.

Forty women were involved in the study and most of them used underarm products. Commenting on the study, a researcher noted however that seven of the women never used any deodorants or similar products. The researcher, Dr. Philippa Darbre believe the parabens came from other cosmetic products.

Dr. Darbre also added that there was no conclusive link between parabens and breast cancer. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology.
