Skin Cancer Risk Can Double Due to Sunbeds

Many persons wanting a tan believe that using sunbeds instead of lying out in the sun itself will protect them from skin cancer. However, research by the International Agency for Research into Cancer (IARC) indicates that sunbeds increase the risk of developing skin cancer by 75 percent.  

 

Of concern based on the research from IARC, is the Cancer Research UK survey showing that 82 percent of people who use sunbeds start using them long before they hit 35 years old. One of every three women surveyed from a group of 400 admitted to using sunbeds.

 

The SunSmart Campaign is advocating for a ban on anyone 18 or younger being allowed to use a sunbed for tanning. A spokesperson for UK-based cancer charity, Cancer Research UK said “We are never going to get rid of the cultural view that suntans are sexy but there is misconception that sunbeds are safe…”
