A Japanese study on stem cells used to repair the breasts of women who have had surgery due to breast cancer holds promise for breast enhancement as well. The procedure, which has so far been done on approximately two dozen women in
Japan, uses stem cells obtained by liposuctioning fat to fill craters left because of surgery. This is done to improve the look of breasts that have been left looking abnormal after a lumpectomy or radiation treatment. The study was reported at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium over the weekend.
Dr. Keizo Sugimachi, the lead researcher said that eight months after treatment, ‘about 80 percent of patients are satisfied.”
The scientists believe that the use of stem cells in this way may one day lead to the end of artificial material being used in breast enlargement procedures. Cytori Therapeutics, developer of the treatment is planning to expand the study in 2008.
