Study Indicates that Aluminum in Sunscreens can be Harmful

Updated Aug 19, 2007

Researchers at Keele University in the United Kingdom believe that aluminum in sunscreen may hasten the aging of skin and possiblly lead to cancer. Results from the study shows that the presence of the material in the body “produces reactive oxygen species” leading to aging of the skin and possibly cancer.

The researchers tested seven sunscreens to measure the level of aluminum included. Of the seven, three had aluminum listed as an ingredient. All seven had varying levels of aluminum. Lead scientist of the study group, Dr. C. Exley believes that using sunscreen everyday contributes to a higher than needed level of aluminum in the body.

Experts believe the study may adversely affect the use of sunscreen products which could be dangerous as it may result in fewer people using sun protection lotions. Others disagree with the result of the study, claiming that such studies are not scientifically sound according to Cosmeticdesign-europe.com.
