Researchers at Brown University have unearthed what they believe are worrying facts about a chemical preservative widely used in cosmetics. Reports stated that the researchers conducted tests on tadpoles to determine the possible effects these preservatives may have on humans. It was found that even small amounts of biocide methylisothiazolinone (MIT) were enough to adversely affect brain function.
The compound is thought to be safe for humans when used in small concentrations. It is especially common in soaps and shampoos. So far, no link has been suggested between the chemical and incidents of brain damage among humans when the allowable concentration is used. No evidence has been put forward indicating that the FDA approved concentration is harmful in any way.
