Study Shows Fear of Being Fat a Motivator for Keeping Fit

Updated Dec 2, 2007

A study conducted at the University of Bath by Professor Brett Martin and Dr. Rana Sobh showed that the fear of being “fat and unattractive” was a factor in persons keeping fit. One hundred and forty undergraduate students at the University took part in the study. Some of the participants were told to imagine themselves “dramatically failing” to stick to their exercise schedule, while others imagined themselves “dramatically succeeding” at this.

Of the two groups, 85 percent of those who saw themselves failing were more motivated to train to avoid become what they feared most – fat and unattractive. Only 65 percent of the group who saw themselves succeeding were motivated to continue exercising.

University of Bath School of Management Professor Brett Martin, one of the researchers, noted that “When people dwell on a negative future, fear motivate them, yet as they move away from their feared state – a flabby body, or a wrinkled skin – they become less motivated.”
