Study Shows No Increased Risk of Breast Disease from Silicone Implants

Updated Nov 5, 2007

Despite fears to the contrary, a study published in the November issue of the Annals of Plastic Surgery claims that there is no increased risk of ‘cancer, connective tissue disease or other serious chronic disease’ for women with silicone breast implants. This is the first comprehensive study of breast implants and breast disease done since the Institute of Medicine published their report in 1999.

The study’s authors however, noted that future study of women with silicone breast implants should focus on the higher rate of women committing suicide in this group.

The study team was led by Joseph K. McLaughlin, PhD of the International Epidemiology Institute and Loren Lipworth, SC.D., of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
