Based on reports from market research company, NPD, department store bronzers have doubled in sales in the last five years. During the period, sales jumped from $30 million to $62 million. Experts note that this massive increase in the sale of ‘sunless’ tanning solutions such as bronzers, lotions and moisturizers is due to warnings about skin damage from UV exposure. As such, those seeking the beauty and perceived healthier look of tanned skin are turning to safer alternatives, such as sunless tanning solutions.
With people’s desire for tanned skin but the need to avoid sun exposure, cosmetic manufacturers are delivering what is being demanded: artificial bronzers, lotions and sprays. One concern, however, is that some persons who are using sunless tanners wrongly believe that the products also offer sun protection, which they do not.
