eBay Wins L’Oreal Battle

Updated Aug 18, 2008

A couple of weeks ago, cosmetic giant L’Oreal took eBay to court for failure to stop the sale of counterfeit Lancôme goods on the auction site. However, of the five European countries investigating the claims, Belgium has given their verdict. The country’s Tribunal de Commerce found that eBay was not liable.

In an interview published online, L’Oreal representatives will not accept the verdict in favor of eBay handed down by the Belgium body. eBay claims to spend in excess of $20 million to minimize the sale of counterfeit goods on the site. eBay states however that although they work to control counterfeit it is the responsibility of the companies to protect their own copyright.
