Makeup & Acne: How the Two Can Go Together

Makeup & Acne: How the Two Can Go TogetherAcne prone skin is perhaps one of the most frustrating for anyone to deal with, especially since this particular condition targets both men and women of all ages. For women, acne can make even something as simple as wearing makeup a hassle. However, there are ways to make the two work together hand in hand. With the right know-how, any woman can avoid common mistakes when it comes to putting her best face forward.

One of the biggest makeup faux pas committed by women with acne prone skin is caking on layers of foundation and concealer. While this tactic does indeed mask the acne, it looks obvious and is very unappealing. Plus, wearing tons of caked on makeup all day every day only does more harm than good for the complexion. When the skin is not able to breathe, this typically leads to even more clogged pores and ultimately, more breakouts.

In order to find the right makeup application techniques for your acne prone skin, it is best to first evaluate your complexion and take things from there. If you have very severe acne, chances are even the best makeup won’t make your complexion appear completely perfect. However, those with mild to moderate acne will have more successful results when dealing with this issue. The key to applying foundation and concealer is to first apply a small amount and then gradually build up the coverage as needed. Many women tend to use a heavy hand when putting on their concealer and foundation, hence the caked on, layered look. Start with a light application and then check your face in the mirror as you go along. This is the ideal method for avoiding an overdone appearance.

Keep in mind that you should be using concealer and foundation that is designed for acne prone skin. The type of makeup products you use factors into the final results and how your skin will fare after a few hours. If you’re using the wrong kind of formula and/or color, you’ll want to make sure to go to the store and have a professional makeup artist match your shade.

Speaking of concealer, this single makeup item is one that can make all the difference in how your makeup appears when all is said and done. Since acne prone skin tends to behave differently depending on the state of your complexion, you may want to purchase more than one shade of concealer so that you’ll have the right kind of coverage regardless of how your skin is reacting. Even the best concealer can’t hide every single type of acne-related skin issue. In general, it’s best to have green concealer to combat redness on your face as well as one that matches your skin tone to cover up tiny blemishes and/or pimples. Are you dealing with a pretty severe breakout? Then you may want to check out concealers that are heavier and formulated for problematic areas.

If you can get away with it, sometimes all acne prone skin needs in terms of makeup is a touch of concealer for any problem areas and finishing powder. Skipping the foundation from time to time gives your skin the chance to breathe so do your best to work away from the full-on mask of foundation, concealer, blush, eye and lip makeup and tone down to a more natural look.
