The opening note is incense, which quickly glides into a rich, fruity, yet very brief nose of bergamot, citrus and ylang ylang. The black orchid peeks through this bouquet, but shifts into enveloping, yet never overpowering woods and a whisper of patchouli, without the 60s patina. A hint of sugary sweet vanilla and then a powdery, long lasting finish of incense.
The collection and blend of notes in this scent is impressive. For instance, the sandalwood, lotus wood, patchouli, and vanilla are nicely sweetened by a gardenia, jasmine, orchid, and ylang, which masterfully keep the scent in perfect balance. The fragrance is never bitter nor too floral.
Reminiscent of Oscar de la Renta`s floral incense concoction, "Ruffles" from the 1980s, Ford`s "Black Orchid" could use a longer mid-range, as the scent evolves rather quickly. It doesn’t quite achieve the smoky depth that you would expect. However, "Black Orchid" could be a smashing success on the right woman.
