Skin Lightening: The Beauty Debate

Skin Lightening: The Beauty DebateThe concept of skin lightening isn’t new and has been around for quite some time. The skincare industry has especially enjoyed huge profits by offering various skin lightening creams, ointments and other related products. In fact, in places like Japan and India, this part of the industry makes billions of dollars a year. Although there is continued controversy over the subject, the reality is that many people’s reasons for using this method are no longer limited to superficial matters.

In the past, individuals sought out skin lightening treatments in the effort to lighten the color of their skin in order to become more acceptable in society, feel more attractive or establish themselves within a higher caste system. In countries like India, this practice was highly popular due to the fact that many associated darker skin as a sign of belonging to a lower caste system. Japan and China are also often classified as having this same type of mentality when it comes to the color of a person’s skin. Unfortunately, this has given the concept of skin lightening a negative reputation and for those that use such products, there is the worry of being misjudged.

While there are still those that seek this alternative for superficial reasons, there are many more that do it for legitimate reasons. It is important to address individuals in the latter situation because it is helpful to spotlight a more positive perspective of skin lightening. This can help encourage those that can benefit from this practice to seek treatment instead of being intimidated or feeling like they will be unfairly judged.

One of the main reasons why individuals today are using skin lightening treatments and products is to correct what is known as hyperpigmentation. Also known as skin discoloration, many suffer from having large areas of skin where the pigmentation is not uniform in color, compared to the rest of their body. Hyperpigmentaton typically appears on the face but can also be found on other major areas of the body, including the mid-section, back, legs and arms. Dealing with this condition can be very embarrassing for a person and could cause them to feel insecure, especially during the summer when most people wear minimal clothing that shows off more skin.

Another situation where skin lightening is a positive form of treatment is in the case of controlling skin diseases or disorders. The most common types of skin problems where this alternative can prove to be effective include eczema and vitiligo. Similar to hyperpigmentation, these conditions often result in an uneven appearance in skin tone. Those that have vitiligo suffer from extreme loss of pigmentation, which cannot always be easily concealed. By using certain skin lightening products, a person has somewhat of a better chance at achieving a more even appearance in skin color.

As we age, the skin tends to suffer from the signs of aging as well as sun damage. Dark spots are a common sign of both. Skin lightening products also have the ability to correct this problem and lessen the effects.

As you can see, there are a number of reasons why some individuals use skin lightening treatments and products - and they have nothing to do with trying to be better than someone else or pretending to be something they are not. It is vital to spread the word on these positive uses for skin lightening in order to change the misconception behind this practice and those that choose to use it.
