The Role of Moisturizer

The Role of Moisturizer

With all the anti-aging, so-called “miracle creams” on the market, it understanding the role good old moisturizer plays can be confusing. At its most basic level, a moisturizer is designed to hydrate and protect skin. Today’s high-tech products also deliver crucial ingredients to skin and help fight a barrage of environmental assaults.

Moisturizers come in a variety of forms, including, creams, lotions, gels, balms and serums and are comprised of a combination of components:

·    Occlusive oils : They slow water loss.

·    Humectants : They bind water to the skin by absorbing environmental moisture as well as water from the skin’s lower layer of cells.

·    Hydrophilics : They prevent evaporation and sooth the skin.

·    Other components: Water, sunscreens, emulsifiers, preservatives, fragrances and coloring agents.

·    Extras : Ceramides, antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, essential fatty acids, Aloe, Urea, Lactic acid, AHAs, collagen, Elastin and Hyaluronic acid.

How do you decide which moisturizer will help you achieve or maintain beautiful skin? Nearly all skin types can benefit from the antioxidants, anti-irritants and hydrating elements found in many of the best moisturizers. Rather than relying on one key ingredient, look for products with a blend of synergistic ingredients. Ultimately, the right product for you depends on your skin type and personal taste.

Day vs. Night

Do you really need an a.m. and p.m. moisturizer? Daytime moisturizers are usually lighter than nighttime lotions and creams. In addition, many daytime moisturizers are formulated with broad-spectrum sunscreen. Using a different product for day and night is pretty much a matter of taste, as your skin will benefit from a moisturizer no matter what time it is.

Beyond Moisture

Many of today’s super-charged moisturizers deliver potent anti-irritants and antioxidants. Anti-irritants help sooth skin irritation and reduce redness with ingredients like, aloe, burdock root, chamomile, green tea and more. Sensitive skin types should take a “less is more” approach to moisturizers and look for fragrance-free products without too many ingredients. Antioxidants fight free radicals and can even help boost the effectiveness of sunscreen. Common antioxidants include:

·    Alpha Lipoid Acid

·    Coenzyme Q10

·    Grape seed extract

·    Vitamins A, C, E

What about Eyes?

Don’t forget about your eyes! The thin, fragile skin around your eyes has no natural lubrication and is quick to show dehydration and signs of aging. It’s best to use a cream or lotion specifically formulated for the sensitive eye area. Note that eye gels - while good for deflating under eye bags - can be drying. If you suffer from fine lines and puffiness, look for a gel-cream formula that targets both problems.
