Your Basic Guide to Lip Care

Your Basic Guide to Lip CareYou may not think about your lips very often but neglecting them can be just as bad as neglecting the rest of your skin. There is a proper way to care for your pout and make sure that they remain soft, plump and kissable no matter what. The last thing you’ll want is dry, flakey and unsightly looking lips - and the good news is that lip care doesn’t take a lot of time, effort or money for miracle products.

When something is wrong with your lips, you’ll know it and so will everyone else. This is why it is important to practice daily lip care. Because the lips are made of very thin skin layers, this makes it even more susceptible to damage. Protection is the key to maintaining healthy and beautiful lips. Did you know that your pout can even suffer from sun damage, including sunburn? It’s true and if you’ve had the unfortunate experience of getting sunburn on your lips, you already know how painful and uncomfortable it is.

The best way to keep your lips from sun damage is to keep them moisturized. There are plenty of lip balms on store shelves that now come with SPF. Make sure to apply your lip balm before going outdoors and remember to reapply it as needed throughout the day. Proper moisturization not only prevents harmful UV rays from doing damage to your pout, it can also work as an anti-aging product. The more moisturized your lips are, the less likely they’ll be to develop deep set wrinkles that occur naturally with age.

As you get older, regular lip balm alone may not be enough to keep your lips in shape. Mature individuals can turn to lip conditioning products, which tend to be fairly affordable. If you’re in the market for such a product look for an item that contains natural moisturizing ingredients such as vitamin A and E as well as SPF protection. More advanced products may also carry alpha hydroxy acid for exfoliation.

Speaking of exfoliation, this is also another basic lip care practice that you should include into your daily skincare routine. Just as the skin on your face and body greatly benefits from sloughing off layers of dry, dead skin, your lips can also get back into shape with gentle exfoliation once or twice a week. There are plenty of homemade recipes for scrubs you can use on the lip area as well as skincare products you can purchase. It is important to note whether the skin of your lips tends to be excessively dry or are sensitive. This will help you prevent a negative reaction to certain ingredients contained in scrubs. If you are not able to use such items to exfoliate your pout then you can simply take a clean, wet toothbrush and gently rub the bristles over your lips. Then wash with lukewarm water and moisturize.
